GRAMMAR FUNDAMENTALS FOR TEACHING ENGLISH AS A FOREIGN LANGUAGE: A TEACHER'S REFERENCE

TABLE OF CONTENTS

Unit 1: Words..........9

INTRODUCTION TO WORDS In this first unit, we begin with some of the more basic building blocks of English: words. We will introduce the concept of parts of speech in the English language and demonstrate those parts of speech with each of their subcategories, as well as numerous subsets and distinctions within those subsets. ORGANIZATION OF THE UNIT We will start by looking at a text about TEFL that contains examples of each part of speech and most of their subcategories. Each section will then give some quick definitions of those examples. After that, you will find expanded sections about each part of speech, which provide further examples, explanations of subcategories, and more in-depth information. The sections of Unit 1 are organized as follows: 1. Nouns and pronouns 2. Verbs 3. Adjectives, articles, and adverbs 4. Prepositions and conjunctions

Unit 2: Sentences..........60

INTRODUCTION TO SENTENCES In this unit, we move away from individual words and start looking at how those building blocks are used to construct larger chunks of meaning. We will approach the concept of sentences in the English language via two main sections. ORGANIZATION OF THE UNIT The unit contains two sections about the formation of sentences. The sections of Unit 2 are organized as follows: 1. Sentence Formation 2. Question Formation “Sentence Formation” starts with an FAQ for new English teachers at a school in Japan, which provides a clear context for some of the section’s examples. Then we consider the various types of sentences in the English language, followed by some structures that occur within and across sentences. There is an expanded section on clauses, followed by a section that explores some common mistakes in forming sentences. “Question Formation” follows a similar pattern, starting with an EFL student exit questionnaire to provide context. We then consider the various types of questions in English and conclude with some common errors that learners demonstrate when forming questions. Now, let’s explore the sections on sentence formation!

Unit 3: Tenses..........87

INTRODUCTION TO TENSES In this unit, we move from words and sentences toward grammar, specifically the tense/aspect verb system of English. To fully explore this system, we first need to define tense and aspect and generally discuss how these facets of language construct English grammar. We will also look at the distinctions among form, meaning, and use as they pertain to language, as well as how those distinctions serve to organize the unit’s sections. This will help you to better digest the information in the sections to come and assist you in applying that information to your language teaching. ORGANIZATION OF THE UNIT 1. Present Simple and Present Continuous 2. Past Simple and Past Continuous 3. Future Simple and Future Continuous 4. Present Perfect and Present Perfect Continuous 5. Past Perfect and Past Perfect Continuous 6. Future Perfect and Future Perfect Continuous

Unit 4: Additional Grammar Points..........168

INTRODUCTION TO ADDITIONAL GRAMMAR POINTS In this unit, the final unit of our grammar book, we consider some additional grammar points of the English language. The sections within represent language points that are important for learners of EFL/ESL but which may not have fit neatly into any other section and/or which we feel deserve separate attention. ORGANIZATION OF THE UNIT 1. Active and Passive Voice 2. Modal Verbs 3. Conditionals
